I met Stella Douglas while doing a corporate job just over a year ago. She is one of those people you cant help but being drawn to because they always radiate joy. During the warm-ups and compulsory long waits that come with any performance job, we got to know each other quite well. Which is how I came to know of Stella’s yoga studio – Pure.Peace.Yoga. A few weeks ago I attended an early pre-work yoga class and chatted to Stella about her studio.
Stella has had an incredible journey – both as a yogi and a Christian. You can read all about her story here: Pure.Peace.Yoga What I really appreciate about Stella’s classes is that she trained to be an instructor in India. She is also open about her own strengths and weaknesses while teaching, and is constantly working on her own journey as a yogi.
She holds most of her weekday classes at The Well Church in Mellville and her Saturday classes at The Rose Garden.
If you think yoga isn’t for you
Think again. Stella meets you at your level, whether you are a beginner or more advanced. In Stella’s studio there is no such thing as a ‘yoga body’ despite all those hashtagged instagram posts. Yoga is for everyone, every body type and every level of fitness, strength and flexibility. That’s the joy of it, and the joy of Stella’s studio. Everyone in every form is welcome to join the classes. And everyone can enjoy the classes.
Stella does specialized classes for kids. There are a whole slew of benefits for kids if they do this kind of exercise. It will help with their schooling and other after-school activities. Yoga will help with the strength and flexibility needed for sport and dance. And learning to be still and focus will help everything from homework to pirouettes.
Fitting yoga into you schedule
Stella’s classes are before and after office hours in Mellville at The Well Chuch. Which helps you beat the traffic to and from work. So if you need to focus before work, or need to unwind afterwards, you can easily fit a class into your schedule.
What I loved about Pure.Peace.Yoga
I’ve attended many different classes at different studios as I’ve moved around. But there is something special at Stella’s studio. When you walk into the class the atmosphere is just different. The exercise itself is taken seriously, but there is an energy I have not experienced in a class before. There is fun and laughter during the classes, which reminded me that finding your centre doesn’t have to be all serious all the time. There is space to breathe and just be in Stella’s studio. There is also an appreciation for everyone at their own level. No one is judged for how good, or how bad they are. The focus is on development and growing.
